Does Target Price Match?

It’s hard to miss a Target store with their eye-catching red and white bullseye logo, but also because 75% of the population of the United States lives within 10 miles of a Target store. This hugely popular chain has over 1,900 physical stores within the U.S. as well as a powerful online presence. In fact, in 2020 alone, the Target Corporation made $93.6 billion in total revenue.

Since 1994, Target has been using the tagline “Expect More. Pay Less” – so if we can, indeed, expect to pay less, does Target offer price matching? Luckily, the answer is yes. But, there are a few rules, limitations and exclusions so we will break it all down for you so you know you are getting the best deals possible.

Target is a great store for families looking for one-stop shopping convenience, due to its vast selection of products, everything offered from groceries to underwear to pet food. In addition to selection, they offer on-trend product lines and limited edition collaborations with designers and brands. Target not only offers everyday low prices, they also offer a slew of additional ways to save. Target offers in-store coupons as well as coupons and promotions online. Free shipping promotions, seasonal sales events, weekly deals, loyalty programs as well as cash back when you use their Target credit card are all smart ways to save.

While coupon codes and seasonal sales are heavily promoted it’s not always as easy to get a handle on the company’s price matching policy. However, if you take a few minutes to go through Target’s price match policy, you can at least have some assurance that you’re getting the best deal.

Target Price Matching Basics

  • Almost everywhere. Target offers price matching in the United States, all states except Hawaii and Alaska.
  • Who do they price match? Target will match its own prices at as well as the following competitors:
    •,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, and
  • Two weeks only. You’ve got 14 days from the original purchase date to price match your item. Present proof of the lower price, and you can get a Target price adjustment.
  • Online and in-store? Yes. In-store price-matching will be accepted in any lane. Online purchases can be price matched by calling Guest Services at 1-800-591-3869.

What Are Target’s Price Matching Rules?

  • Twinsies only. In order to get your item price matched, it must be an identical item that is in stock at one of the approved and accepted online competitors.
  • Proof, proof, proof. While they’d love to take your word for it, Target requires validation of the lower price. Bring the print ad or show the website to verify the online price. Bring all original receipts for items purchased.
  • Can’t cross state lines. This is a little tricky. Target price matches itself only with limitations. In-store Target will price match or the prices in its local print ad. will price match your store. They do not price match their own prices, store to store.
  • In Stock Only. In order to price match you must have bought the item within the last 14 days or you must be able to buy the item. There are no price matching rain checks offered. Also, the item you want to price match must be in stock.
  • No Hoarding. While no official quantity is listed on Target’s policy, they reserve the right to limit your quantities. It’s a good deal, but share the wealth.

Are There Any Items That Are Excluded From Target’s Price Matching Policy?

OK, the official list of exclusions can be kind of overwhelming. But here’s a breakdown of the basics.

  • Errors? No go. So you found a flyer that offers that television for $29.99? Okay it should have said $299.99, and they will really be sorry about it. But they aren’t going to honor any prices that occur out of typographical errors.
  • No coupon stockpiling. So you’ve got a Registry completion coupon? A Target Circle offer, gift card offer? These can’t be combined with a price match.
  • Special sales. Price matching won’t be honored for clearance, closeout, liquidation, damaged, open items, pre-owned or rent or lease items. Also don’t try to match any competitor doorbuster/lightning sales, promotional codes or credit card offers.
  • Pharmacy and Target Clinic. Target’s Pharmacy, Optical and Clinic deals are not eligible to price match policy.
  • Mobile phones. No price matching on contracted mobile phones or plans.
  • Product services. Warranties and Assembly won’t be price matched.
  • Third-party sellers. Target doesn’t price match “Marketplace” items which are offered from third party sellers.

While the list of rules and exceptions can seem a bit daunting, Target’s price match policy is really there to ensure that their everyday price will be better or the same as the everyday price of their competitors. Here are the basic steps you need to take for price matching.

How to Price Match at Target
