How to Shop With Alexa — And Save

The 2020s have yet to bring us the flying cars we were promised, but it’s pretty amazing that you can tell a computerized assistant in your house to order your household staples then get them delivered right to your doorstep.

Eliminating the hassle of running errands with only the sound of your voice is pretty impressively futuristic. The technology is here and after launching in 2017, it’s evolved to be even easier and more secure to use; you might say Amazon and Alexa are a marriage of literal convenience. With Amazon’s mind-boggling selection of products, wildly fast shipping and Alexa’s easy and intuitive voice control, shopping is faster than you ever imagined possible. So if you haven’t already tried shopping with Alexa, it’s time you do. Not only will you save tons of time, when you use Alexa to find deals, you can save money as well. We’ll break down all you need to know to take advantage and start shopping and saving with Alexa.

Can I Order Groceries With Alexa?

Yes, in some cities, you can order groceries from Whole Foods, Amazon Fresh or Prime Now with Alexa.

If this service is available in your city just say: “Alexa, add (item) to my Whole Foods cart” or “Alexa, add (item) to my Fresh cart.”

While you can add items to your cart with Alexa voice command, you will have to go to Amazon.com or the Amazon app in order to change quantities and check out/complete your order.

Is Shopping With Alexa Secure?

Shopping with Alexa intimidates some people, mostly because they worry about how secure the process is. What prevents your hungry son from ordering 15 bags of cheese doodles (or worse, a flat screen television for his room)? Shopping with Alexa is secure and there are specific added security features to prevent unwanted ordering in your household.

To deter mistakes, make sure you use Alexa’s extra security:

  • Set up a four-digit voice code which is required to complete a purchase.
    • Go to the Alexa app and click on “Account Settings.”
    • Click on “Voice Purchasing.”
    • Go to “Purchase Confirmation, Manage.”
    • Toggle on “Voice Code.”
    • Type in a four-digit code.
    • Tap “Go.”
  • Set up Alexa voice ID, so that only household members with recognized voice access will be allowed to order with Alexa.
    • Go to the Alexa app and hit “Account Settings.”
    • Click on “Voice Purchasing.”
    • Go to “Purchase Confirmation, Manage.”
    • Select Voice ID.
      • Create new profiles.
      • Turn on or off saved profiles.

How Can You Keep Track of Purchases Made With Alexa?

While adding items to your shopping cart sure is easy with Alexa, it can be a little confusing to keep track of it all in your mind.

Before you tell Alexa to order, be sure to ask her:

  • “Alexa, what is in my shopping cart?”

This is a smart way to double-check you still want and need all the items before you commit to the purchase.

How Do You Find Deals With Alexa?

There are many ways to find deals with Alexa and new opportunities to save are always being added by Amazon

  • Use the Amazon wishlist. Think of your Amazon wishlist as a kind of virtual window shopping. When you are shopping online or doing some research before considering a purchase, go ahead and add the item to your wishlist. Alexa will now notify you up to 24 hours in advance of a deal becoming available for an item on your wishlist. Your echo dot will glow when you have a notification, just ask Alexa, “Alexa, what are my notifications?”
  • Ask Alexa. If you are wondering what deals are available on Amazon, just go ahead and ask: “Alexa, what are my deals?” or “Alexa, find me deals on Amazon.” After each deal, Alexa will ask if you want to buy the product; if you say yes, the item will be added to your cart.
  • Shop with Alexa for specific things and hear your options. When you know you want a product, but you are open to options, Alexa can help. Go ahead and try and ask Alexa for a general item and she will list you a couple of popular choices. You don’t have to commit to buying anything. Or, ask Alexa, to find you a good deal on a specific item. She will let you know about a popular well-priced choice, and let you know the price and size so you can decide. Say, “Alexa, find me a deal on (item)” then listen to what she finds. She’ll also let you know the potential delivery date.

What Happens if You Make a Mistake Shopping With Alexa?

If you make a mistake while shopping with Alexa, there is no need to panic. You have a 30-minute window to cancel before the order is completed. Just go to your Amazon account on your smartphone or computer and click on “Your Orders.” Check out the list of ordered items and check or select the item/items you want to remove, then click “Cancel checked items.”

Can I Track My Purchases With Alexa?

Yes, once you’ve placed your order you can also check on the status of delivery with Alexa.

To track, just say:

  • “Alexa, where is my package?” She’ll give you an update on when they are expected to arrive at your home.
  • Set up Alexa to update delivery notifications automatically.
    • Go to the Alexa app, tap “Settings.”
    • Go to “Notifications.”
    • Click on “Amazon Shopping.”
    • Toggle to turn on “Delivery Notifications for Out for Delivery and/or Delivered.”
