Formerly known as CBS All-Access, Paramount+ launched in 2020 as it expanded its offerings to all ViacomCBS properties. Aside from its own original content and exclusives, Paramount+ viewers can enjoy new and old favorite series from CBS, MTV, BET, Comedy Central, Nickelodeon and the Smithsonian Channel. It also offers live sports and breaking news to all of its subscribers — not just the ones who pay a premium price.
While it may not be home to the most buzzed-about streaming entertainment, Paramount+ is able to pull in big viewership on more niche content, like the Miles Teller-led limited series “The Offer” based on the true story behind the making of “The Godfather.” The streamer is also full of original hidden gems like “The Good Wife” spinoff “The Good Fight,” a whole slew of live-action and animated series in the Star Trek universe, and “Evil,” the supernatural psychological drama which has found itself a new, edgier life in the streaming underground after airing its first, underappreciated season on CBS. (The same move from network to exclusively streaming was made for “SEAL Team,” too, after its fourth season airing on CBS.)
Paramount+ also has great news for MTV reality enthusiasts thanks to ongoing seasons of “The Real World: Homecoming,” which reunites roommates from the early seasons of the show. And, the decades-long “The Challenge” franchise is expanding exponentially with both network-based and original streaming series of the reality star-studded competitions so you can get your fix of drama any time. Now with a couple of years under its belt, Paramount+ seems to be hitting its stride and rapidly rolling out new content offerings, including lots of Paramount+ Original movies and series, plus loads of nostalgic reboots. But is it worth it for you to join the ranks of its more than 40 million subscribers? Let’s uncover the details to find out if it’s fit for streaming on your home screen.
What Does Paramount+ Cost?
The cost of Paramount+ varies depending on the plan you choose, how far in advance you’d like to pre-pay for your subscription, and whether or not you want to add on a premium channel, such as SHOWTIME.
Paramount+ offers the choice of two distinct plans to fit varying budgets, both of which begin with a seven-day free trial. The ad-free plan is twice the price of the standard plan, but subscribers may choose to save 16% by paying for their subscription in advance for the year.
- Paramount+ Essential Plan: $4.99 per month or $49.99 per year, which compares at $4.17 for each month
- Paramount+ Premium Plan: $9.99 per month or $99.99 per year, which compares at $8.33 for each month
Paramount+ also offers users the option of bundling their subscription with the premium streaming channel SHOWTIME:
- Paramount+ Essential + SHOWTIME Plan: $11.99 per month or $119.99 per year, which compares at $10 for each month
- Paramount+ Premium + SHOWTIME Plan: $14.99 per month or $149.99 per year, which compares at $12.50 for each month
How Much is Paramount+?
In sum, the price of the most basic plan for Paramount+ is just $4.99 per month. However, if you are currently a student, Paramount+ generously offers 25% off an Essential monthly subscription, bringing the cost down to just $3.74 per month.
Is There a Paramount+ Free Trial?
Yes, Paramount+ offers a seven-day free trial for new users; simply subscribe to any Paramount+ streaming plan as detailed above. Just make sure to cancel the subscription before the week ends so you don’t automatically get charged!
Want more than a week for “free?” Starting in September 2022, Walmart will be offering Paramount+ Essential subscriptions — at no extra cost — as part of the Walmart+ membership. (This is clearly a direct shot at Amazon Prime and the e-commerce giant’s own Prime Video offerings, and we won’t lie — we’re totally into it.) So if you’re already a Walmart+ member or were thinking about becoming one, then getting access to Paramount+ essentially for free is an incredibly sweet deal.
What Do You Get With Paramount+ Subscriptions?
Both the Essential and Premium Paramount+ plans grant subscribers all of the same streaming content, including tens of thousands of episodes and movies, and live content like NFL on CBS, Champions League soccer and 24/7 news via CBSN. All subscribers can also set up as many as six different user profiles within their account (including a Kids Mode with parental controls), and watch Paramount+ content on up to three devices at once.
However, the Paramount+ Premium plan allows subscribers to ditch the commercials, except when viewing live TV and a few select TV shows. Plus, Premium plan holders can watch their local CBS station live, download their favorite shows to watch offline later and view even more live sports.
Users who choose to bundle their Paramount+ subscription with SHOWTIME will be treated to all of that streamer’s originals, movies and sports, as well.

It’s important to note that one show you will not find streaming on Paramount+ is the Kevin Costner-led hit drama “Yellowstone.” It’s a little confusing because “Yellowstone” airs on the Paramount Network on cable television, but Peacock actually has the streaming rights to the series — at least for now. However, Paramount+ is home to the streaming-only “Yellowstone” prequels “1883” and “1923” (the latter starring Harrison Ford and Helen Mirren), as well as the upcoming spinoff series “6666” about the Four Sixes Ranch introduced in the main show.
Who Would Like Paramount+ Best?
Because it was formerly CBS All-Access, the true origin of Paramount+ lies in the live feeds of CBS’ long-running reality hit, “Big Brother.” These live streams go all the way back to the year 2000 — essentially making them the OG streaming content of the entertainment world. Today, those “Big Brother” 24/7 live streams are still a big draw for subscribers each summer as the new season of BB airs thrice-weekly on CBS.
However, that’s not the content that most Paramount+ subscribers are likely to pony up the dough for today. Instead, fans of dark and mysterious content will enjoy series like “Evil;” Taylor Sheridan fans will love to binge all of the filmmaker’s “Yellowstone-” adjacent content; and Trekkies will revel in all the universe-expanding “Star Trek” content that can’t be found anywhere else.
Fans of reality television will also find themselves in their glory with full seasons — both current and past — of popular hits like “Love Island,” “Jersey Shore,” “RuPaul’s Drag Race” and many more, particularly reboots and franchise expansions from MTV. And parents of young kids (who are also 90s kids themselves) will love all the Nickelodeon throwbacks like “Doug,” “Rocko’s Modern Life,” “Catdog” and both old and new “Rugrats.”
While rolling out lots of new content — both original and rebooted nostalgia — Paramount+ strikes a nice balance between classic shows, original series, kids’ content and exclusive movies to offer everyone in the family something they can enjoy.

How to Cancel Paramount+
Though their original content offerings are growing rapidly, you still may find that there’s not enough in the Paramount+ library to keep you hanging around month after month. If so, here’s how you can cancel your Paramount+ subscription in a few easy steps:
- Go to ParamountPlus.com.
- Click on your name in the top right corner.
- Click Account.
- In the Subscription & Billing section, click Cancel Subscription.
You’ll still be able to access content until the end of your billing period, but your account won’t automatically renew when that date rolls around. And remember, you can always easily resubscribe when a new season of your favorite show comes out.
Bottom Line: Our Verdict
Paramount+ is one of the cheapest streaming services out there right now. If you don’t mind watching a few ads, you can score an awesome amount of content for less than $5 per month. That means it’ll only cost you $0.25 per hour if you watch just 20 hours of Paramount+ content in a month’s time. However, you’ll pay double that price if you opt to ditch the commercials, so if you just can’t stomach those breaks in your content, there are probably better streaming deals out there.
With all of those numbers in mind, though, we’d have to say that Paramount+ is definitely worth the cost for the Essential Plan, especially for fans of “Star Trek,” Nickelodeon, reality TV and original dramas that like to break the rules.
