Is Uber One Worth It?

While most people are familiar with Uber — the ride hailing service that connects drivers with passengers — ride hailing isn’t their only offering. Uber offers a variety of other services as well. Two of those, grocery delivery and restaurant food delivery, are being bundled together with the ride-hailing service to create an attractive membership program that offers discounts and perks on all three. For those who regularly utilize ride hailing and food delivery services — whether provided by Uber or its competitors — Uber One program has several benefits that are worth checking out.

What Is Uber?

Since launching in 2011, the Uber name has become synonymous with ride hailing (or ridesharing as some call it, which is a misnomer since it isn’t a carpooling service), providing transportation options beyond traditional taxi and private car services. The original vision for Uber was to help riders connect with drivers, securing an affordable way to get from point A to point B. Since then, Uber has expanded its service offerings.

In fact, Uber doesn’t consider itself a ride hailing company so much as a technology company that provides movement — movement of people and the things people need. Here are the services currently offered by Uber:

  • Ride hailing.
  • Bike and scooter rentals in partnership with Lime.
  • Package delivery.
  • Restaurant food delivery.
  • Grocery delivery.
  • Freight-booking solutions.
  • Scheduled, employee travel services.
  • Restaurant, music show or concert bookings through Uber Explore.
  • Alcohol delivery in partnership with Drizly.

Uber recognized that by bundling its three most popular services together and creating a paid membership program, it could provide special discounts and a higher degree of service. The Uber One membership program would also provide the convenience of using one app for all three services. The Uber One loyalty program affords its members discounts on:

  • Standard rides.
  • Restaurant orders.
  • Grocery and alcohol deliveries.

This means that instead of using three different service providers — for example, Uber for hailing a ride, DoorDash for restaurant food deliveries and Instacart for grocery deliveries — an Uber One member will simply use the Uber app to order a ride, have restaurant orders delivered and groceries as well.

Why Did Uber Launch Uber One?

Uber One attempts to bring users of other service providers into the Uber fold. For example, some Uber users are extremely loyal to the Uber app for snagging rides but use a competitor for restaurant and grocery delivery services. Or loyal Uber Eats customers might be using Lyft instead of Uber for ride hailing services. Providing a financial incentive for using one provider for a variety of services gives customers a reason to bypass the competition and build loyalty with Uber.

What Happened to Uber Eats Pass?

Prior to November 2021, customers of the most popular food delivery service, Uber Eats (affiliated with 600,000 restaurants globally and available in 6,000 cities worldwide), were able to subscribe to a membership program called Eats Pass. The cost of the Eats Pass membership was $9.99 per month. It included free restaurant food delivery and 5% off orders over $15. The Eats Pass subscription service was replaced by Uber One on November 16, 2021. The Uber website explains that members of Eats Pass will be automatically enrolled in Uber One.

With Uber One, former Eats Pass subscribers will enjoy expanded benefits beyond what they previously received, for the same cost. In addition to $0 delivery fees and 5% off orders over $15, those same subscribers will enjoy $0 delivery fees and 5% off grocery delivery services and 5% off Uber rides as well.

What Happened to Uber Pass?

With the introduction of Uber One, lots of people are asking, “What happened to Uber Pass?” Well, it’s still around, sort of. Uber Pass was another membership program that has been replaced by Uber One (although current members can choose to maintain their subscription). It was similar to the new Uber One subscription, however, it cost $24.99 a month and provided a deeper discount on rides. For $24.99 a month, Uber Pass subscribers received:

  • 10% off rides.
  • $0 delivery fees on grocery orders over $40.
  • 5% off restaurant delivery orders over $15 .
  • $0 delivery fees on restaurant orders.

However, as of November 16, 2021, Uber Pass is no longer available to purchase. And while Uber Pass offered 10% off rides versus 5% offered with the Uber One subscription, the Uber One membership costs substantially less.

How Much Does Uber One Cost?

Uber offers two plans for the Uber One subscription. The subscription can be purchased on a month-to-month basis for $9.99 or for an annual fee of $99.99. When choosing the monthly plan, the subscription will auto-renew every month. When selecting the annual plan, it will automatically renew each year, beginning on the enrollment date and using the payment method provided.

What Are the Benefits of Uber One?

The Uber One perks expand on the benefits Eats Pass and Uber Pass subscribers received. And, in fact, offer one new perk — the Uber One Promise — that could turn out to be a deciding factor for many. The Uber One benefits are as follows:

  • 5% discount on all standard Uber rides.
  • 5% off Uber Eats restaurant delivery, with a minimum purchase of $15. Available at merchants that have an Uber One icon in the app.
  • 5% off grocery and alcohol delivery, with a minimum purchase of $30. Available at merchants that have an Uber One icon in the app.
  • $0 delivery fees for food orders that exceed $15.
  • $0 delivery fees on grocery orders that exceed $30.
  • Top-rated drivers will be dispatched for Uber rides.
  • Premium support.
  • The Uber One Promise: Receive a $5 credit every time your Uber Eats delivery arrives late. If a food order arrives after the estimated drop-off time (shown after placing the order), Uber promises to put $5 in Uber Cash into your account.

How Does the Uber One Program Work?

Uber set out to make the Uber One membership program easy to sign up for and manage. For example:

  • After signing up for Uber One, the savings and benefits are automatically applied.
  • The savings (5% off rides and food delivery) accumulated from using Uber One services will be deducted from Uber One’s subscription fees.
  • Once the subscription fees are covered, you will start accumulating Uber credit in your account.
  • Canceling an Uber One subscription is a straightforward process. If canceling the subscription within 48 hours of the billing day, this can be accomplished in the app by selecting Manage Membership and then End Membership. Even if canceling within 48 hours of the billing day, Uber customer support can initiate that for you, just give them a call.

Is Uber One Worth It?

As with any membership program, individuals should analyze past usage and anticipate possible future usage, coming up with an estimate of what they expect to spend.

For example, if after looking at account history, with both Uber and its competitors, you foresee a monthly spend of at least $200 in rides and food delivery services, you should consider an Uber One subscription. If you think you may only spend $165 a month, consider signing up for the annual membership. Anything you spend over those amounts will result in Uber credits being deposited into your Uber account after the subscription fees are met.

Aspects of the program to consider in your analysis:

  •  If you are a frequent user of ride hailing services, you are likely to benefit from 5% savings on all standard rides while being paired with higher-rated drivers.
  • If you regularly order food delivery, either restaurant or grocery, you’ll enjoy the 5% savings and may also score some $5 Uber Cash, courtesy of the late delivery promise.
  • If you are loyal to another provider of ride hailing services or restaurant delivery services and see yourself continuing to divide your loyalty, you won’t benefit as much as if you were to consolidate all three, using the Uber app.

Many people use Uber for ride hailing services so frequently that this plan will be an obvious choice. The same can be said for Uber Eats customers. The key is to have a solid understanding of your spending habits. Once that has been established, knowing you will receive a 5% discount on rides and delivery services, no delivery fees, better drivers and possibly bank $5 in Uber Cash on the occasion your food delivery is late, makes the Uber One membership an easy buy-in.

Uber One Benefits — the Fine Print

As with all subscription programs, it’s important to understand the details. They aren’t meant to be sneaky or hidden in any way. These points are all well made and easily found by reading through the Uber One information on the Uber site. Here is a helpful list of specifics of which you should be aware:

  • You must spend a minimum amount per order to score free delivery: For restaurant food delivery, you must place an order of at least $15 (before taxes and fees) to activate the $0 delivery fee. For grocery delivery orders, your order must be at least $30 to trigger the free delivery feature.
  • The “Uber One Promise” is only for food delivery: Unfortunately, if your Uber ride arrives later than the estimated time to take you to your destination, you won’t receive $5 in Uber Cash. The “Uber One Promise” applies only to food deliveries, not ride services.
  •  Your savings will first be deducted from your service fees: The discounts you receive (5%) will first be applied to your Uber service fees. Not until those are covered will you see Uber Cash accumulate in your account.
  • The 5% savings does not apply to all Uber partners: You’ll need to be on the lookout for the Uber One icon in the app. These are the food, grocery and alcohol merchants that participate in the program, allowing you to earn a 5% discount on your order.
  • Ride hailing savings is limited: The 5% savings will not be applied to shared rides.
  • The clock starts once your order is placed: It may be a fine point, but since the Uber One Promise kicks in the moment your order is late, it’s key to understand that it is on the latest arrival estimate, which is determined once your order is placed.
  • Minimums do not include taxes and fees: If taxes and fees are included in your order total, they won’t apply toward your order minimum. Your restaurant food delivery order must be a minimum of $15 before taxes and fees, if applicable. A grocery delivery order must be at least $30 before taxes and fees, if applicable.
  • Being an advanced planner may work against you: If you book your Uber One ride 30 minutes or more in advance, the 5% Uber One discount will not apply.

How Do I Sign up for Uber One?

Signing up for Uber One is simple. Once you’ve downloaded the Uber or Uber Eats app, navigate to the “Account” tab, in the top-right corner. Tap the “Uber One” button. Next, select “Choose Plan.” From there, you’ll be able to select either the monthly or annual membership.

Current Uber Pass members will need to actively choose to join Uber One, canceling their Uber Pass membership.
