Lizzo’s YITTY Is Changing the World of Shapewear

Singer Lizzo is bursting onto the intimate apparel scene with the same fanfare as when she first emerged on to the music scene nearly eight years ago.

While the bra market is crowded as of late, the oft-ignored shapewear sector is not. It’s SKIMS vs. SPANX, the former being the most size and skin tone inclusive, and a few other intimate apparel companies offer a smattering of pieces, but nothing that catered to someone of Lizzo’s stature and size — until now.

The three-time Grammy award-winning singer has teamed up with Kate Hudson backed apparel maker Fabletics, for her new shapewear line called YITTY, based on her childhood nickname and her passion for helping other women show themselves a little love.

The collection officially dropped on April 12 at Fabletics, and the singer hopes that her pieces will help all women feel “good as hell” in the skin they’re in.

What Makes YITTY Different?

Hoping to see the same success as fellow musician Rihanna has with her lingerie line SAVAGE X FENTY, the company says for nearly three years, the 33-year-old Lizzo has put her heart and soul into building this game-changing, size-inclusive brand from the ground up — all based on the principles of self-love, radical inner confidence, and effortless, everyday wear.

“I felt that I was constantly being told through TV and magazines that my body wasn’t good enough. And, in order to be considered ‘acceptable’, I had to inflict some sort of pain upon it to fit into an archetype of beauty. Because of this, I’ve been wearing shapewear for a long time, maybe since I was in fifth or sixth grade.”

Just like her boundary-pushing music and fashion choices (a simple Google image search yields plenty of Lizzo showing more than a fair amount of skin), the classically trained musician turned designer hopes to do the same with YITTY. “I was tired of seeing this sad, restrictive shapewear that literally no one wanted to wear. I had an epiphany like, ‘who can actually do something about this?’ I decided to take on the challenge of allowing women to feel unapologetically good about themselves again,” said Lizzo.

Like Lizzo’s message of body positivity and inclusivity, YITTY offers an inclusive size range for all its pieces, XS to 6X. In a viral TikTok video, the “Truth Hurts” crooner says YITTY pieces are supposed to be worn as “underwear, overwear, anywhere, period.”

YITTY debuts with about 100 pieces, grouped into three distinctive collections: 

NEARLY NAKED: A lightweight seamless collection designed to comfortably shape and firm your natural curves all day, every day.

MESH ME: Smoothing mesh styles that blend fashion with function, designed to wear as underwear or outerwear

MAJOR LABEL: What the singer calls an assortment of everyday lifestyle pieces that are super soft, super bossy, and “super YITTY.” They’re “designed to make you feel like that b*tch,” she says, quoting her famous song lyrics.
