So, you want to buy your groceries at Target, but you don’t have time to drive to the store and walk through every aisle, looking for the best produce and meat selections. Good news — Target has programs like curbside pickup and same-day delivery, to save you time on all of your shopping needs.
With the Target same-day delivery program through Shipt, you can have Target groceries and household essentials delivered right to your door in as little as an hour. Of course, that convenience does come with a cost — in this case, a $99 annual membership fee for Target Shipt Delivery. So, are the benefits of the delivery service worth the cost?
How to Use Target Grocery Delivery
Once you sign up for a Shipt account, having your Target groceries delivered couldn’t be easier. To use the service, visit Target’s Same-Day Delivery page or the Target app, or place a Target order through Shipt.com. If you’re shopping at Target.com, you can browse grocery categories like produce, meat and seafood, beverages and more, as well as curated product selections like Game Day Snacks and Thanksgiving Dinner Ideas.
Once your cart is loaded up and ready to go, you can choose your delivery time. And often, that can be in as little as an hour from when you place your order. So if you need some last-minute groceries for dinner that night, Target’s team of shoppers has you covered. To see if same-day delivery services are available in your area, go to Target.com and enter your ZIP code.
One small caveat about shopping with Target Same-Day Delivery is that you can’t pay with Apple Pay, PayPal or EBT cards, even though you’re placing a digital order. (Now might be a good time to consider applying for a Target RedCard.)
What Can I Order for Target Same-Day Delivery?
A quick scroll through Target’s Same-Day Delivery page shows that you can add everything from fresh raspberries to a gingerbread decorating kit to laundry detergent to your Target Shipt delivery order. Of course, focusing on grocery delivery isn’t a bad plan, especially during the hectic holiday season. And if you place multiple orders a month, the membership fee for the Shipt service might well be worth the time (and gas money) you’ll save by not going to the store.
Plus, if you already order household supplies like toilet paper or dish soap from other delivery services, but you want to switch to Target grocery delivery, it might make sense to stick with one service for everything. Having one annual membership fee can pay off if it helps you eliminate the delivery fees you’re paying elsewhere.
And while you can add on household essentials like detergent and cleaning supplies, note that not everything available in Target stores is available for same-day delivery. Per Target’s Same-Day Delivery FAQs, some electronics and clothing items, for example, aren’t available for same-day delivery. If you’re not sure whether or not you can have what you want delivered on the same day, add it to your cart in the Target app or Target.com. If it’s eligible for Target delivery the same day, that will show up as an option, alongside the pickup and shipping options. The other thing to be aware of, per Target’s FAQ, is that due to supply chain issues, there may be limits on how many high-demand items, like ibuprofen or hand sanitizer, that you can buy in one delivery order.
Still not sure what to order? If you place your Target grocery delivery order through Shipt.com, you can add your dietary preferences to your profile to make digital grocery shopping even easier. Filter food suggestions by categories like vegan and vegetarian, as well as gluten-free or organic.
What Does Target Same-Day Delivery Cost?
As we mentioned above, Target’s Shipt delivery program will cost you $99 a year for a membership. After that, deliveries over $35 are free; deliveries under $35 will incur a $7 fee. Alternatively, if you’re not ready to bite the bullet just yet, you can pay $9.99 for a single same-day delivery order. (If you’re planning to place even one order a month, though, the annual fee quickly becomes a better deal than the per-order price.)
Another major perk of Target Same-Day Delivery is that there aren’t price markups for the products you add to your order. That means the prices you pay for the items in your Shipt order are the same prices you’d pay if you walked into a Target store and bought them. The only fee is the membership cost or individual delivery fee.
If you’re planning on ordering grocery delivery, that makes Target a great option — other services like Instacart charge hefty product markup fees, per NBC Los Angeles. A report from the outlet found a 24% markup on Costco groceries. And while using services like Instacart allows you to get around the Costco membership fee, you might not be saving much money if every item is subject to a markup. Plus, the outlet also found markups of 15% or more at grocery store chains that don’t have membership fees.
What if the Store Doesn’t Have What I Ordered?
Target’s Same-Day Delivery program puts customers and shoppers in touch with one another. So if, say, the specific frozen meal or type of apple you want isn’t available when they’re shopping at Target, your delivery person will contact you via phone or text to see if you want to remove the item from your order or substitute something in its place.
And if you’re choosing something you think might be unavailable, you can also add a backup option for your shopper, such as another color or flavor, that they can use to replace your first-choice item without having to contact you multiple times.
Do I Have to Be at Home for Target Same-Day Delivery?
There are no specifications on the Target website about customers being required to be home for their same-day deliveries. So if you select the “Drop-Off Delivery” option, you should be able to have your items left at your door if you can’t be home during your delivery window. (Of course, that’s barring factors like needing to buzz a delivery person into an apartment building, for example.) Your delivery person should contact you via phone or text about the drop-off process, at which point you can tell them to leave your items at the front door.
Still, if you aren’t home to receive your Target Same-Day Delivery order, you might be missing out on the store’s full offerings. You don’t want, say, refrigerated or frozen items to be sitting out outside. This isn’t a meal-delivery kit or a grocery box — the cold items won’t be insulated or packed with dry ice. So if you can be home for your Target delivery, that’s still the best option.
Should I Leave a Tip on Target Same-Day Delivery Orders?
Tipping delivery workers is customary, and you can leave tips for Target grocery delivery orders, too. You’ll definitely want to tip if, say, you live in a walkup apartment building and ordered some heavy items your delivery person lugged up the stairs. But even delivery drivers to ground-level home entrances will still appreciate a small tip of thanks.
To add a tip to your Target Same-Day Delivery order, just click “Orders” on Target.com or “Purchase History” in the Target app. From there, go to the “Online” tab” and click “Rate & Tip Your Shopper.” You can tip your shopper and even rate your satisfaction with your order. Of course, you can always give your delivery person a cash tip when you meet them at the door, too. Either way, you can feel good tipping your shopper knowing that 100% of tips go to shoppers, according to Shipt.
How to Save Money on Target Grocery Delivery Orders
If you want to get your groceries delivered from Target on a regular basis, there’s no way to avoid Shipt’s membership fee (or the individual grocery order delivery fees). But there are still a few ways to save, especially if you haven’t used Target’s Same-Day Delivery program before.
- Use a new customer coupon code on Shipt. If you haven’t used Shipt for deliveries from other retailers before, you can save big on your first Target grocery delivery. We recently saw a coupon code for $20 off your first $50+ order at Shipt, which you can use at Target as well as at other retailers. The site is usually running some sort of incentive for new customers, so be sure to check out the Shipt.com featured deals if this is your first time using the service.
- Use Shipt’s promotions to save even more. If you’re someone who often brings manufacturer’s coupons with you to the grocery store, you’ll be pleased to know that Shipt has regular money-saving deals, too. Some recent Shipt/Target deals have included $2 off $10+ purchases of Pillsbury and Betty Crocker baked goods and $5 off $20+ purchases of Stouffer’s frozen foods.
- Shop with your Target RedCard. Stacking deals is always an easy way to save money. Using your Target RedCard on your grocery delivery order will save you 5%, without you having to put in any additional effort.
- Refer friends to Shipt to save $10. Want to spread the good news about Target grocery delivery? Every time you refer a friend to Shipt, you’ll get a $10 credit to use on your next order. Plus, they’ll save $10 off the cost of their annual membership. It’s a win-win.
- Shop the Target weekly ad. Just because you’re shopping online and not in person doesn’t mean you have to miss out on all of Target’s weekly sales and promotions. As we stated before, the prices for Target grocery delivery orders are the same prices you’d find in store. And that includes any limited-time promotions on the groceries you’re ordering. While you’re at it, don’t miss Target’s Deal of the Day, too.
- Join Target Circle rewards. Target Circle, accessible on the Target website and in the Target app, lets you earn 1% cash back for all of your purchases. And you don’t have to have a RedCard to use it — although that’s an easy way to save even more money. In addition to the cash back rewards, Target Circle features unadvertised deals on specific items — think of it as your own private sale.
You can use Target Circle rewards in person by scanning the Target app at the register or entering your phone number at self-checkout. But if you place your Shipt delivery order through Target.com or the Target app, you can use your Target Circle savings on deliveries, too.
Can You Use Target Same-Day Delivery for Gifts?
The short answer is, yes. As long as you know the recipient’s address, you can send Target Same-Day Delivery orders to your friends and family. (If you’re sending anything refrigerated or frozen, though, you should confirm they’ll be home to receive the delivery during the pickup window you choose.) So if you want to send a last-minute gift to a friend or ease some of their stress by helping them get groceries into the fridge, the Target-Shipt partnership is a great option.
If you don’t want to send your friends a Target order, you can also gift them a Shipt membership. Annual gift memberships are the same cost as if you bought one for yourself, $99, while a six-month gift membership will set you back $49. And they can use it to shop at all of Shipt’s available retailers, too, not just Target.
Now that you know how to make the most out of Target’s Same-Day Delivery program, you might never set foot in the grocery store again.
Can I Order Alcohol for Target Delivery?
No. Alcohol is one of the items excluded for same-day Target delivery, because Target needs to be able to verify the age of the purchaser. If you want alcohol the same day and don’t want to go inside a store, you can order alcohol via Target’s curbside pickup service, Drive Up.
